I've been asked to remind players about the specific wording of
USA Hockey Rules concerning Slashing.
-
Rule 633: Slashing
-
Referees should penalize as "Slashing" any player who swings
the stick at an opponent (whether in or out of range) with
or without actually making contact, or when a player on the
pretext of playing the puck makes a wild swing at the puck
with the intent to intimidate the opponent.
-
A minor penalty will be assessed to any player who makes
stick contact with the opposing goaltender, in the goal
crease, who has covered or caught the puck, whether or not
the Referee has stopped play.
The
Ref's have been fairly lenient concerning how they choose to
call situations that 'could' be called slashing. We
understand that in the past, (and in many leagues) players play
to the whistle. But this is a recreational league, and a
lot of arguments are started when players slash the goaltenders
glove after he has cover the ball. So while we will
continue to be lenient, when it's deemed 'close'... understand
that the letter of the rule says you may not make stick contact
with the goalie when he has the ball covered in the crease.
You can't smack his glove hoping to knock the ball loose.
Same issue applies to wild swings at the puck. It can tend
to be a grey area... what is considered 'wild'?
Everyone will tend to have a slightly different view on what
crosses the line. I just want everyone to be aware of the
exact wording of the rule and how it can be applied.

No
official suspensions were handed out from the Monkeys vs. Detox
incident.
My
original intention was to suspend Mark Kaylan 1 week.
Mark didn't show up for the games today, so it's a wash anyway.
POSTED 11/24/08
Game was called off at 5:46 left in the 3rd Period.
Mark Kaylan, Jimmy Pagats, Brian Wolford, & Ryan Maisano were
given Game Misconducts.
The
League is reviewing this game, and suspensions will
possibly be handed out.
The
more I think about it, the more unhappy I am about the
situation.
I
can't make my decisions on what people say happened.
I
can only base my decisions on what I personally saw, and what it
looked like to me.
I
thought the game was well called before the last incident.
In
the 1st and 2nd period, both teams were called for 2 minors.
The
'offense' that Detox claim went uncalled, I saw as incidental
contact,
and
nothing 'intentional'.
But
players on Detox felt differently and took matters in their own
hands,
with Mark Kaylan blatantly going after Monkeys players.
This is what I feel instigated the final result, which brought
the game to an end.
I'm
also mad at Ryan Maisano for 'roughing' after everything seemed
to be
breaking up. That incident alone could have erupted the
whole thing back
into a total fiasco.
That is the kind of thing I am talking about ...physical
instigation.
That is what I consider 'crossing the line'.
And
is exactly the kind of thing I keep saying I am going to go
after.
I
saw a retaliation from Jimmy, but I didn't see anything that I
thought
was
physical instigation on the part of the Monkeys during the
incident.
If
I missed seeing something, sorry.
But
this is the risk you take if you decide your going to go 'after'
some other player.
Chances are I will only see what you do, even if it's
retaliating for something else.
So
here I am wasting my time thinking about BS instead of finishing
the stats again.
Players who cross the line and end up wasting my time, are going
to be suspended.
Stop wasting everyone's time. (including your teammates)
I
will post my final decision about this game and possible
suspensions tomorrow.

The
current area we are allowing goaltenders on feet to move in is
the trapezoid area marked by the floor boards. This is
subject to change, but right now that's what we're using.
POSTED 10/28/08
We
sell cheap jerseys here, so there's no reason teams don't match.
Don't give me your order at the rink.
Use
the order form on the website.

I’m
going to describe a situation to you, the way I see things
usually play out.
Two
guys don’t like each other.
Both keep yapping back and forth.
Finally, one of them ‘crosses a line’ and the other responds in
kind.
After, I have to decide who and how to suspend.
Now
I understand why the NHL created the ‘instigator rule’.
So
here it is…
If
you’re 'that guy' who ‘crosses the line’ don’t cry to me about
everything that happened before or after. Because you are the
one who will get my full attention.
And
if you do it at the end of a game, it's going to be that much
worse.
It’s similar to what I tell guys all the time about minor
penalties….
Referees may miss calls, but they never miss ‘the retaliation’.
So
this is what I'm telling my Refs to use as a guideline
for instigation related penalties...
Severity…
- 2-minute minor for unsportsmanlike
conduct (for mouthing off too much)
- 10-minute misconduct (for severely
mouthing off)
- Game misconduct (for physical
instigation)
- Game misconduct resulting in
suspension (for causing a minor scuffle)
- Game misconduct resulting in long
suspension (for causing a serious fight)
- Game misconduct resulting in really
long suspension (for causing a serious fight near the end of
a game)
Some guys can go out and play a physical game, and still keep it
friendly.
Others just have to talk crap, cry, bitch, whine, play dirty,
take cheap shots,
and
try to get away with shit.
Stop the stupid shit, keep your mouth shut and play the game.
So
there it is, no one can say they haven't been warned.
And
why do I have to warn anyone anyway?
